My Kiwi information report

By Miracle Lemana
I am learning to inform my audience through an information report

What bird is flightless, small, brown, fuzzy and is native to Aotearoa, New Zealand? Yes, it is the extraordinary kiwi bird. Did you know that kiwis actually have a great memory, and are capable of learning quickly. Studies have shown kiwis can remember negative experiences for up to five years, which can help them stay alert in the wild. There are different important things about Kiwis that we need to know in order to help them to survive. To understand the kiwi we can look at the physical and behavioral adaptations, their diet, and also what are the common predators.

The kiwi bird is roughly the size of a chicken, with the female kiwi being larger in size compared to the male kiwi. The physical adaptation of a kiwi is that it often in shades of brown this helps to camouflage the kiwi within its habitat. It has 13 brown flightless feathers on their wings, these wings are not strong enough to allow the kiwi to fly. The is related to other flightless birds like the emu, ostrich and moa. Unlike any other bird the kiwi has a long pointy beak with nostrils on the tip. This is very unusual for many birds to have nostrils at the end of it’s beck. This physical adaptation allows for the kiwi to use its sense of smell over their eyesight, as the kiwi is rather blind so they rely on their sense of smell. Especially as the kiwi is nocturnal and hunts for food at night.

Kiwis are omnivores so that means that they eat both meat and plants. The kiwi bird likes to eat many things like invertebrates and berries. Their favorite snack to munch on are earthworms. Luckily New Zealand is rich with a variety of worms. The earthworm is also one of the main sources of water for the kiwi as the earthworm is 85% water. This allows for the kiwi not to have a habitat that isn’t necessary located close to water. However if they are close to a body of water the kiwi bird can eat some a range of food from the water including crayfish/koura, eels and tuna. While the kiwi is hunting, the predators can also be lurking for kiwis in the dark forest.

A predator is a living thing that hunts another living thing. The kiwi bird has many predators like the cats, stoats, dogs, ferrets and possums. These predators are usually hard on the adult kiwi as they are flightless and their habitats are located on the ground in areas that are easy to reach for such predators. The kiwi adult is a target, as well as the young and the eggs. In order for the kiwi to survive and stay our national treasure we need to provide safe habitats were kiwis are able to have their needs meet.

As you can see the kiwi is a unique bird, that has many physical and behavioral adaptations. The kiwi is a native treasure to New Zealand that needs to survive for our future generations. We must have an understanding of the adaptations, the diet and the predators to make sure that the kiwi continues to stay alive.

Nuckelavee
Image result for nuckelavee

The Nuckelavee was a creature of abject terror, and spoken of with bated breath until comparatively recent times. Although many folklore creatures had a binary nature, the Nuckelavee was a creature of pure evil. It is a human man attached to a skeleton horse of hell. According to the old Legends, who lived in constant fear of the Nuckelavee, only the power of the Mither o' the Sea kept the beast away! The Legends say that this mythological creature used to be a kind hearted man with his horse. Then one day he went to war and they both died leaving trailed blood on the mountain of Justice. Did you know that the nuckelavee has no skin. Black blood is visible through his veins! The Nuckelavee name is also known as the devil of the sea.

But don’t let the nuckelavee scare you tonight it is only a made up creature.

Sea Turtles

Do you know which animal is a reptile and has a shell on it’s back? If you answered sea turtle then your right! Did you know that sea turtles can live for a century There are seven known sea turtle species from around the world, and the biggest specie is the Leather-back. The life cycle of a sea turtle has three main parts, eggs, babies and adulthood. First is the egg stage.

The female sea turtle digs a hole at a beach or in lower dunes. Then it lays about 110 eggs and covers then with left over sands. It may take 6 weeks for the baby turtles to hatch. After 6 weeks not all sea turtles hatch but 90 of them may survive. They squirm out of the sand and race to the waters.

While they are trying to race to the waters they can be stopped by many predators like seagulls, crabs and raccoons. 50% might make it to the waters but then they find a new group of predators in the sea like fish and sharks. Usually they would swim under a bunch of seaweed then they grow and grow until they’re adults.

Now that they are adults they have new predators like big sharks and big whales. After a few years the sea turtles will be able to mate and start the whole cycle again.

The Disgusting Lunch

I am learning to: Inform my audience by sharing an entertainment moment.

Eww what’s that smell I asked myself as I cover my nose. I was guessing what the smell could be, was it mushroom (vomit sound). As I recognised the smell, wait, wait… NO WAY! I knew that I smelt something fishy!

I ran as fast as I could upstairs to confirm what it could be, fish soup or fish stew. I knew that I was close, it has to be something with fish! When I got upstairs I could see a big pie bowl. I got so disgusted that I didn’t want to look at it. My mum came,“What's for dinner?” she said as she came from her bedroom. “ Fish cakes, that’s for dinner mum” I said.

I tried to go back to my bedroom as soon as possible but it was too late. My dad dragged me to my chair. He got me a plate and told me to get two fish cakes. He knew that I hated them that's why I was first to eat it. They were all staring at me while I picked my two. I was about to overcome my fear of the fish cakes.

But did I do it, NO. I stared at it for a long time, then I looked at my dad and said “ do I have to eat this? ”

Charlie's New Friend

I am learning to write a narrative based on a image

Charlie was a lonely boy always doing monotonous things. But then one day, Charlie look out the window suspiciously at the children outside playing cheerfully. “Why am I so lonely,” Charlie moaned. As soon as he said that his mind flicked and he had an idea. He got a lot of mechanical pieces and started to build a robot.

A few days later after school, Charlie went to find his robot.“Where could he be,” Charlie asked. He looked all around his chaotic bedroom, under his untidy bed, in his dusty bookshelf and in his dark closet. Huffing and puffing and swiping all the sweat while trying to find the robot of his life. Making his way down the stairs towards the kitchen, thinking that his robot would be munching with glee and easily located in the kitchen.

But NO! The robot wasn’t there, so he ran outside of the house leaving the door open behind him. He was so worried that he didn’t stop to look at the open door. He past his friend’s house and the candy store to go to school. He obviously found his robot but with the bullies from school, too. Charlie had forgotten that his robot was going to pick him up after school. Charlie and the robot uniting forces to take on the school bullies and prepare for the battle of their lives. !HYAAA!

Both Charlie and the robot end up sprinting as fast as lightning back home. They hug each other and they will never forget that day!

My Super Saturday

We went on a trip in a huge, silver car, zooming along the road to the park. My sister and I went crazy all the way there. I could hear people screaming with joy, because we were nearly at the beach. We saw that everyone was all wet and soggy. We couldn’t work out if it was a dream or a reality, we hoped for reality. Could you guess that I was in water wonderland?
